UK van sales down 4.6% in October

960 640 Stuart O'Brien

The light commercial vehicle (LCV) market declined marginally by -4.6%, in October, with 27,420 vans registered according to the latest figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Despite this representing the second consecutive month of decline – albeit not as steep a fall as in September – the sector remains 2.3% up on the five-year pre-pandemic average for the month of October, with 2021 proving to be a strong year for LCV sales to date.1

Over the course of the month registrations of heavier vans, which weigh more than 2.5 tonnes and comprise the majority of the LCV market, fell by -8.9%. Pickups and vans weighing between 2.0-2.5 tonnes also declined by -16.9% and -16.6% respectively.

There was some good news, however, with registrations of 4x4s – a typically small market which has been buoyed by new models – and vans weighing less than 2.0 tonnes doubling, with increases of 114.7% and 100.5% respectively.

Year-to-date, registrations of LCVs have increased by 24.4%, to 294,656 units, compared to 2020 when Covid related issues were more widely felt.2 But despite the sector seeing a rebound in registrations in 2021, the market still remains -5.2% short of the pre-pandemic five-year average, equating to 16,026 less vans being sold, primarily due to the global shortage of semiconductors.3

As a result of the ongoing challenges facing the sector, SMMT has downgraded it’s outlook for the LCV market by over 20,000, to 340,000 units registered in 2021. While this remains higher than 2020, it represents a net decline against 2019 sales, with the market not expected to recover back above that level until 2023.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “While it’s disappointing to see the number of new vans registered during October decline, demand has remained strong over the course of the year. The commercial vehicle sector, however, is not immune to the challenges faced by the industry as a whole, most notably the semiconductor shortage. Manufacturers are working hard to fulfil orders to ensure fleets can continue to be renewed and the latest models, including zero emission products, hit UK roads.”

Revolutionary fleet technology company secures investment fuelling future growth

960 640 Stuart O'Brien

Lightfoot, the UK’s leading provider of in-cab driver coaching and engagement technology, has today announced that Volpi Capital has invested in the Devon-based green-tech company.

The business, which rewards smoother and safer driving leading to reductions in accidents, fuel use and emissions in fleets, first developed its technology to help ICE fleets cut costs and improve efficiency. Now, it is carving a niche in the Electric Vehicle (EV) sector using its heritage in EV motors and batteries to give it an edge in range extension.

New AFP guide aims to help businesses create mobility roadmap

826 501 Stuart O'Brien

A new guide released by the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) aims to help businesses create a roadmap towards adopting a recognised mobility policy.

“How to Deploy a Mobility Solution Within Your Business” has been created by the organisation’s Future Mobility Steering Committee and is based around a three step process – “Do Your Homework and Get Your Data”, “Internal Engagement” and “The Plan.”

Paul Hollick, chair at the AFP, explained: “Our view is that we are very much in a moment when many fleet managers are beginning to evolve into mobility managers but they don’t yet have a formal strategy in place to support this transition.

“There is added impetus for this at the moment because, as we emerge from the pandemic, interest in mobility has been renewed. It was temporarily on hold because many mobility solutions rely on shared assets but that moment is now passing.

“The message we want to get across with this guide is that the move to mobility should not be a daunting one. There is a lot of data analysis, employee engagement and internal functional alignment needed, but thereafter it is relatively straightforward.

“The three steps we have outlined will take managers through this process in a simple and effective manner and, for AFP members, there is the option of talking to others who have made the same journey and can offer advice and support.”

The new mobility guide follows up an earlier document from the AFP, “What is Mobility and Mobility Management?” designed to provide a potential framework within which all interested parties can discuss the subject and its impact in its entirety.

Paul said: “The two documents work well together. The first sets out a consensus view of what constitutes mobility management and the second provides a roadmap to adopting a mobility policy. Our Future Mobility Committee is doing really good work in this area.”

The new guide is being distributed to AFP members and is available by e-mailing the AFP administration centre on administration@theafp.co.uk.

Fleet efficiency: Four tips for stress-free fleet operations

960 640 Stuart O'Brien

Pivotal to the success of any business is the need to optimise performance. As any successful operations director will know, getting your workforce and goods from A to B safely and cost-effectively is no straightforward task.

These four fleet hacks should make all the difference.

Royal Mail engages all-electric company car schemes

960 640 Stuart O'Brien

Royal Mail has announced a new initiative to ensure all its company cars will be electric by 2030, as the company builds on its ambitions to become a net zero carbon emission business with a 100% alternative fuel fleet.

Under the plans, the Royal Mail will rework all of its current car schemes to accelerate the switch to electric vehicles. This includes widening the access to electric company cars for those colleagues who need a car to do their job. By 2025, only electric cars will be available to order across all company car schemes.

The drive towards electrification will also extend to postmen and women who seek to buy their vehicles through the company’s popular salary sacrifice scheme MyDrive, with the associated tax benefits that come with running an electric company car. Royal Mail plans to offer a range of affordable entry level electric vehicles.

To reinforce the commitment to change, the company says it will only pay business mileage reimbursement at an appropriate electric vehicle rate for diesel, petrol and hybrid private cars and company cars from 2025.

Royal Mail’s says its company car fleet is already changing and has undergone a significant move to electric vehicles since the April 2020 tax changes. Around half of company car orders are now for electric vehicles. It says this new initiative is aimed at accelerating this trend by encouraging the take up of more electric vehicles in a push to reduce the company’s emissions still further.

Jenny Hall, Director of Corporate Affairs, Royal Mail said: “We’ve already revealed our ambition to turn our fleet to alternate fuel vehicles in order to do the right thing by the communities we serve. It makes sense for us to focus on company cars too, and we hope that this new scheme will benefit our colleagues while reducing overall Company emissions further.”

With the UK’s largest “Feet on the Street” network of over 85,000 postmen and women, Royal Mail claims to already have the lowest reported CO2e emissions per parcel amongst major UK delivery companies. It says the expansion of alternative fuel vehicles demonstrates the Company’s commitment to reducing emissions associated with its operations, and to delivering a cleaner future.

In May, the Company announced the launch of 29 low emission gas powered trucks, fuelled by Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG). The 40 tonne Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) are similar in size and look to a conventional Royal Mail truck but are significantly quieter. They also emit roughly 84 per cent less CO2e than a typical diesel-fuelled vehicle of this size.

Also in May, Royal Mail announced the launch of its first ever Delivery Office to feature an all-electric fleet of collection and delivery vehicles. The Bristol East Central Delivery Office, located in the City’s Easton area, has had its 23 diesel delivery and collection vans replaced by fully electric equivalents – comprising the Office’s entire collection and delivery fleet. Six electric charging posts and 12 charging points have also been installed on the site as part of the transformation.

Bristol was selected due to the City’s plans for a Clean Air Zone (CAZ), which will require certain vehicles to pay a daily charge to enter its centre. At present, other Delivery Offices across the UK are being considered for similar fleet makeovers in coming months – particularly those in places with existing CAZs, or that have plans to introduce them.
