Net zero has moved into a new phase. For many businesses, the last few years have been about making commitments. Setting targets. Publishing ambitions. Saying the right things. But we are now entering what I would call the credibility decade.
This is the point where statements alone are no longer enough. Customers, investors, procurement teams and supply chain partners increasingly want to understand the data behind the claim. What emissions have been measured? What sits inside the boundary? Where are the hotspots? What is being reduced? And what evidence supports the journey?
This matters enormously for fleet.
For many organisations, fleet emissions are one of the most visible, measurable and operationally important parts of their carbon footprint. Vehicles, fuel, mileage, driver behaviour, route planning, maintenance, utilisation and transition to lower emission alternatives can all materially influence progress towards net zero.
But the role of fleet goes beyond a business reducing its own Scope 1 emissions.
Fleet management providers are increasingly part of their customers’ Scope 3 story. That means the data, advice and solutions they provide can help customers make better decisions, evidence reductions and strengthen the credibility of their own carbon reporting.
In simple terms, fleet management as a service can become a net zero enabler.
By helping customers understand vehicle emissions, optimise usage, reduce fuel consumption, transition appropriately to EV or alternative fuels, and report reliable data, fleet providers can move from being seen as operational suppliers to strategic sustainability partners.
That is where the opportunity lies.
The businesses that will stand out are not necessarily those making the boldest claims. They will be the ones with the clearest insight, the strongest data, and the most practical reduction plans.
Because net zero without insight is just a statement.
And in the credibility decade, statements will not be enough.
