WHITE PAPER: The Impact of Immediate Feedback on Driving Behaviour

960 640 Masternaut, a Michelin Group Company

Given that business drivers are 30-40% more likely to be involved in an incident on the road than private drivers, many organisations are concerned about driver safety. Data from the UK government and safety organisations such as RoSPA clearly indicate that driving at higher speeds increases the risk and severity of accidents. However, the benefits of reducing vehicle speed do not only improve driver safety. It also has a direct impact on operational costs and carbon emissions by being beneficial for fuel efficiency, as mpg reduces dramatically at higher speeds.

At Masternaut, a Michelin Group Company, we believe in promoting a culture of best practice behind the wheel, to create lasting change in a business’ mobile workforce. One way of making drivers more aware of their actions on the road is through Masternaut’s in-cab coaching device

Masternaut’s in-cab coach is a small, dashboard-mounted device that provides drivers with instant audio and visual feedback when it detects dangerous and wasteful driving behavior. Many of our customer case studies have demonstrated that people are more likely to change their behaviour when they receive immediate rather than delayed feedback, and as a result, the in-cab coach is able to encourage conscious and subconscious driving style adjustments.

The in-cab coach offers drivers alerts that are triggered by harsh acceleration, braking, speeding, as well as excessive idling. By enabling drivers to improve their driving style independently, we have found that not only can driver safety be improved, but your business will also save fuel, decrease carbon emissions, and reduce vehicle wear and tear.

On average, a vehicle with NO in-cab coach feedback records 5.7 harsh driving events per hour, whereas a vehicle with in-cab coach feedback records 4.2 driving events per hour. This has further enabled our customers to save on fuel and insurance costs by an average of £360 per vehicle per year.
