Strengthening Post-Collision Response: The emerging role of fleet operators in saving lives

Driver First Assist (DFA) is a national road safety Community Interest Company working to strengthen one of the least developed areas of the Safe System approach: post-collision response.

For over a decade, DFA has worked alongside police, fire and ambulance professionals to equip drivers with the skills and confidence to act safely and effectively in the critical moments following a road traffic collision, before the arrival of the emergency services. Our training focuses on dynamic risk assessment, scene protection, emergency communication and trauma-based first aid, helping to create calm, capable bystander responders rather than passive witnesses.

At Fleet Summit, DFA will outline why fleet operators are uniquely positioned to become part of a wider distributed post-collision response capability across the UK road network. Occupational drivers collectively travel millions of miles every day and are often among the first people present at the scene of a collision or medical emergency. Yet despite operating in a high-risk environment, many remain outside traditional workplace first-aid structures.

DFA is engaging with fleet operators, road safety organisations, regulators and industry stakeholders to explore how practical, scalable driver training can help strengthen road system resilience, support employee wellbeing and potentially improve casualty outcomes through earlier intervention.

The session will also examine how post-collision preparedness aligns with wider fleet priorities including duty of care, driver welfare, safer driving culture and Vision Zero objectives. Attendees will gain insight into the growing national conversation around post-collision response and the important role that fleet operators can play in helping to reduce preventable deaths and serious injuries on UK roads.

DFA believes that safer roads are not created solely by preventing collisions, but also by improving how effectively society responds when collisions occur.
