The UK’s transition to zero-emission commercial vehicles remains a critical aspect of its decarbonisation strategy. While electric van (e-van) sales have seen a recent uptick, systemic challenges are hampering progress towards mandated targets.
According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), electric van volumes grew by over a third (36.7%) in the past month, reaching 2,322 units. However, the annual market share of electric vans remains below expectations, prompting urgent calls for a review of market regulations.
The recent growth in electric van registrations marks the second consecutive month of recovery, following four months of decline earlier in the year. Support from government initiatives, such as the continuation of the Plug-in Van Grant for the next financial year, has played a part in this resurgence. As a result, the market share of electric vans rose from 6.1% to 7.7% month-on-month.
