CASE STUDY: How a major retailer reduced fleet risk and transformed safety with telematics integration

In 2016, a major retail fleet with 22,000 drivers faced significant challenges in managing driver safety and risk. The driver training team struggled with limited access to data, making it difficult to inform intervention and training activities.

The presence of multiple telematics and dashcam suppliers further complicated the centralisation and comparison of data. Additionally, the initial driver application and assessment process was entirely paper-based, and the business had a limited view of their risk trends, concentrations of risk and common issues.

To address these challenges, the retail fleet partnered with SambaSafety, a leading provider of cloud-based risk management solutions. SambaSafety implemented a comprehensive solution that aggregated and centralised data points from all suppliers into a single, harmonised dataset. This solution delivered automated analytics to a team of 50 driver trainers, highlighting which drivers needed training each week.

The entire driver assessment process was digitised, providing roughly 1,000 users access to the same data with personalised alerts and insights. Senior management gained a holistic view of their operation’s risk landscape and the ability to benchmark different parts of their business.

The results were impressive:

  •  Within the first three months, there was a 40% improvement in the riskiest driver scores.
  • High-risk behaviour reduced by 26% in the first six months and by 33% in 18 months.
  • Incident frequency decreased by 17%, and driver engagement increased by 40%.

SambaSafety’s innovative solution enabled the retail fleet to revolutionise how they evaluate and mitigate driving risk, ultimately streamlining their operations and fostering a safer driving environment for their employees.
