The UK is taking a major step towards safer roads, with the Government moving ahead with plans to mandate 18 advanced vehicle safety technologies for mass-produced vehicles under the Great Britain type approval scheme. The package includes Advanced Distraction Warning and Drowsiness and Attention Warning – technologies designed to identify risks such as driver distraction and fatigue before they contribute to a collision.
The move reflects a broader shift in road safety: from responding to crashes after they happen to using technology to help prevent them. The Government estimates the package could prevent more than 14,000 people being killed or seriously injured over a 15-year period.
But the benefits of this technology don’t need to be limited to new vehicles.
For existing fleets, replacing a vehicle simply to access the latest safety technology may not be practical or financially viable. Instead, installing Guardian to those vehicles provides another way to bring advanced driver safety technology to assets already on the road.
